Before my independent trip to Jiuzhaigou, what cost me the most time was piecing the information together into a smooth plan. Everyone knows Jiuzhaigou is beautiful, but once you get there you find plenty of puzzles to solve: how to catch a connecting ride after getting off the train, which area to stay in so you can stroll to the gate the next morning, and inside the Y-shaped valley, which branch to take first so you don't waste energy yet still catch all the quiet corners?
My trip in mid-October 2026 was when I gathered the details, tested things myself and untangled each of those knots on the ground.
This post has no vague praise like "heaven on earth". I've put all my real experience of independent travel in Jiuzhaigou into one seamless, logical route in the order you need to prepare: pick your timing → connect the legs of travel → tips for choosing branches inside the park to avoid the crowds → real places to stay near the gate → restaurants and how to budget your costs most sensibly.
Quick summary
• Best time:15/10 – 30/10. Avoid 1–7/10 completely (China's National Day).

1. Where Jiuzhaigou is and how the valley is laid out
Jiuzhaigou is in Aba Autonomous Prefecture, in northern Sichuan. The whole scenic area is laid out in a closed Y shape, splitting at the Nuorilang transfer station junction:
- Left branch (Zechawa Valley):the longest and highest (up to 3,100 m at Long Lake). This branch has only 2 main sights: Long Lake and Five-Color Pond.
- Right branch (Rize Valley):the most beautiful, with the densest cluster of sights: Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake, Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoals Waterfall and Mirror Lake.
- Middle branch (Shuzheng Valley):running from the Nuorilang junction gradually down to the main gate: Nuorilang Waterfall, the Shuzheng lakes, Sparkling Lake and the Reed Lake marsh.
The altitude ranges from 2,000 m (gate) to 3,100 m (Long Lake). The valley has lots of trees, so oxygen is plentiful, and most people do not get serious altitude sickness; just breathe steadily when climbing the steep wooden stairs.
2. Which month to visit Jiuzhaigou?
No need to overthink it:mid-October to early November is the scenery at its peak.
Avoid 1–7/10(China's National Day): tickets sell out early, room prices go up several times over, and bus queues last an hour.
Outside autumn, room prices are much cheaper the rest of the year.
- Temperature by month and what to wear:Jiuzhaigou weather by month.
3. What to prepare before you go?
Skipping the basics, these are the things to settle before the flight:
- Passport:always keep it on you. The ticket gates at the high-speed train station, the national park gate and hotel reception desks all scan the passport itself directly.
- E-wallets:activate Alipay and WeChat Pay with an international card (Visa/Mastercard) already linked. Prepare a backup such as buying yuan, ZaloPay or MoMo.
- Internet:use atravel eSIMwith data roaming. You can open ChatGPT, Facebook and Instagram directly without turning on a VPN.
- Map app:install Amap. Google Maps in China has offset coordinates and cannot show bus stop locations as accurately as Amap.
- Clothing:dress in layers (thermal shirt + thin sweater/fleece + a windproof, water-resistant jacket). Queuing at the gate in the morning is bitterly cold, and by noon, walking in the sun, you will want to take some layers off.

4. From Vietnam to Chengdu
Chengdu has two airports:Tianfu (TFU)(new, handles most international flights from Vietnam, 55 km from the center) andShuangliu (CTU)(close to the center, mostly domestic flights). A direct flight from Vietnam to Chengdu is usually 5–6 million VND one way, while a flight with a transfer is cheaper, around 3–4 million VND.
Case 1: Fly directly to Chengdu
If you land at TFU in the late afternoon, don't try to ride overnight to Jiuzhaigou. Take metro line 18 straight to the area aroundChengdu East station (成都东站), and book a room for the night. The next morning, go to the station hall and takean early high-speed train, which saves your energy and removes the risk of missing the train. That said, choose Shuangliu airport if you can, because it is much closer to the center, and getting to Chengdu East station is faster and cheaper.
Case 2: Combining Chongqing and Jiuzhaigou (my actual experience)
If your trip includes Chongqing first like mine, connecting on to Jiuzhaigou is very easy and convenient:
- Train leg:take the high-speed train from Chongqing North station (重庆北站) to Chengdu East station (成都东站), which takes only about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Use the internal transfer lane:high-speed train stations in China have a convenient transfer lane (Convenient Transit – 便捷换乘). As soon as you step off the train at Chengdu East, you don't need to exit the ticket gate or queue for a security re-check of your luggage; just follow the transfer lane signs straight up to the waiting hall upstairs.
- Timing tip:booking 2 trains about 30 – 40 minutes apart is very relaxed: just enough time to haul your suitcase up to the waiting hall, use the restroom, buy a bottle of water and then scan your ticket to board the nexthigh-speed train going straight to Huanglong Jiuzhai station(Huanglongjiuzhai). The connection process is self-contained, so it takes no effort at all.
5. From Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou
Since the end of 2023 there has been a high-speed train toHuanglong Jiuzhai station (黄龙九寨站). Taking the high-speed train plus a transfer bus is the most reliable way right now. Here is a detailed guide to independent travel to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu this way:
Leg 1: High-speed train (Chengdu East ➔ Huanglong Jiuzhai station)
- Time:~1 hour 40 minutes.
- Ticket price:~138–141 yuan one way in second class (about 550,000–560,000₫).
- Getting tickets:book onTrip.com. Tickets go on sale 14 days ahead, but Trip.com opens bookings from 60 days ahead at the same price, so don't hesitate to book early in peak season.
How to book and ticket-hunting tips:book a high-speed train ticket to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu.
Leg 2: Shuttle from the station to the valley gate (about 90 km)
- As you leave Huanglong Jiuzhai station, you will see the pickup area right away for theshuttle bus (shuttle bus)which runs straight to the Jiuzhaigou bus station (Goukou area).
- The fareshuttle busis fixed: ~50–52 yuan/person (about 200,000–210,000₫), and the ride takes about 1h30–2h on a smooth, winding mountain road. You can also book ahead the sharedminivanrides on the Trip.com app for a similar price.
Tips for choosing a ride in both directions:from Huanglong Jiuzhai station to Jiuzhaigou.
6. Entrance and bus tickets
Jiuzhaigou ticketsare divided into two seasons with different prices:
- Peak season price (1/4 – 15/11):190 yuan (entrance ticket) + 90 yuan (park bus) = 280 yuan/person (about 1,110,000₫).
- Low season price (16/11 – 31/3):80 yuan (entrance ticket) + 80 yuan (park bus) = 160 yuan/person (about 630,000₫).
Rules you need to know:
- The bus ticket is a must if you want to see everything, because the total road length in the 3 valleys is over 50 km.
- Book tickets throughTrip.combefore the trip using your passport number. At the gate, just show your face and scan the original passport at the automatic barrier, with no queue at the paper ticket counter.
- The ticket is valid for one use per day, and it expires once you walk out through the control gate.
- The park buses are a fleet of blue 45-seaters running continuously like a metro system. You can get on and off freely at every stop all day.
Step-by-step booking with screenshots:how to book Jiuzhaigou tickets online with a passport.
7. Park shuttle bus
There are no private cars in the park, only thegreen buses, and you can get on and off at any stop all day. The smartest way is toride the bus up high and walk downhillalong the wooden boardwalks by the lakes.
The key rule at 07:30 in the morning:do not get off first at the "hot" spots halfway up like Five Flower Lake. At this hour the light is against you for photos, and you run straight into the biggest wave of tour groups.
Instead, ride straight to the highest point of one of the 2 branches. Once you finish from the top, the rest of the day is very relaxed:
- Option 1: All the way up the left branch – Long Lake (quick and neat, my choice):this branch has exactly 2 sights (Long Lake and Five-Color Pond). Buses are crowded at first, but it takes only about 1 hour (08:00 – 09:00) to finish this branch completely, and then you can calmly spend the best hours of the day on the right branch.
- Option 2: Up to the top of the right branch – Primeval Forest (for those who like quiet and love walking):most visitors rush to get off at Five Flower Lake, but if you ride all the way to the last stop at Primeval Forest, the scene is completely empty. From here, stroll about 3 km downhill past Swan Lake; the boardwalk through the pine forest in the early morning is very quiet and photogenic. After this stretch, catch the bus back down to the lakes below.

8. Best 1-day itinerary, hour by hour (from real experience)
This itinerary comes from my real Jiuzhaigou travel experience, covering the best spots in the valley without wearing you out:
- 07:00 – 07:30:be at the ticket gate, ready to scan your passport as soon as it opens.
- 08:00 – 09:00 (left branch):be at Long Lake at exactly 08:00. The lake is absolutely still and there is not a soul around. After taking photos, walk down the wooden stairs to Five-Color Pond. The water here changes color with the depth of the bottom very clearly. Seeing both spots neatly takes exactly 1 hour.
- 09:30 – 12:30 (right branch – the best sunlight window):take the bus back to Nuorilang and change to the right branch. Get off at Arrow Bamboo Lake and walk gradually down past Panda Lake to Five Flower Lake. At this time the sun is right overhead (10:30 – 11:30), and the light shines straight through the jade-green water, so you can see the ancient tree trunks lying on the bottom. Keep walking along the boardwalk by the stream to Pearl Shoals Waterfall, the familiar spot where the monkeys were filmed in the 1986 series Journey to the West.
- 12:30 – 13:30:rest for lunch at the Nuorilang service area. Bring self-heating rice or a cold-cut sandwich and eat on a wooden bench by the road to save time; don't squeeze into the buffet canteen, which is both noisy and pricey.
- 13:30 – 16:30 (middle branch – drifting downstream at ease):stop to see Nuorilang Waterfall right at the junction, then hop on the bus to Rhino Lake, pass the Shuzheng lakes, and get off at Sparkling Lake to get ready to stroll throughReed Lake.
- 16:30 – 17:00:board the bus from Bonsai Lake stop to the main gate, ending a day that fits just right without missing any sights.

9. Should you add Huanglong?
Huanglong is about 30 km from the train station and is famous for its terraces of limestone pools holding turquoise water. However, think carefully:
- The biggest risk is physical strength and altitude sickness:the top of Huanglong is as high as 3,560 m. This is where the most people get headaches, nausea and chest tightness.
- Effect on your schedule:visiting Huanglong will cost you at least half a day to a full day more, plus the cost of the cable car and connecting transport.
If your trip is only 2 days 1 night or your fitness is moderate, my firm advice is to skip Huanglong. Giving all your energy and time to Jiuzhaigou gives a much fuller experience than rushing through both places and ending up exhausted. But if you have more time, don't skip Huanglong, because it is truly worth visiting.
Location, altitude, how to fit it into the itinerary, who should go and who should skip:should you combine Huanglong with Jiuzhaigou.
10. Where to stay so you don't have to wake up at 5 a.m.?
Rule for choosing a room:only book hotels within a 1–1.5 km (15-minute) walking radius of the ticket control gate.
On autumn mornings the road in front of the Jiuzhaigou gate is jammed with shuttles, and getting a taxi or ride-hailing bike is almost impossible. Staying near the gate means you can sleep 45 minutes longer, slowly eat a bowl of hot noodles and walk straight to the queue.
- Goukou area (right by the gate):5–10 minutes on foot to the ticket gate. The most expensive rooms, with all kinds of amenities.
- Zhangzha town / Bianbian Street area (1–1.8 km from the gate):the most balanced choice. This is where solid hotel chains are concentrated, such asJI Hotel, Homeinn Neo, Vienna Hotel… There are many restaurants and convenience stores around, and it is pleasant to stroll in the evening.
- Jiuzhai county town area (35–40 km from the gate):cheaper, but definitely don't book. Every morning you would lose almost an hour on a winding mountain road to the gate, ruining your own plan to enter early and avoid the crowds.
How to read the map to know if a hotel is really close:where to stay in Jiuzhaigou. Quick pick:6 hotels near the gate, under 15 minutes on foot.
11. Food: avoiding the canteen trap and local favorites
The cuisine here has a Tibetan–Qiang flavor: many dishes of yak beef, barley and warming stews.
- Dinner dish worth trying: yak hot pot(牦牛肉汤锅). Free-range yak has firm meat, sliced thick and dipped into a broth cooked with fragrant, sweet wild mushrooms. I ate at a yak hot pot place I really loved, 聚福源·牦牛肉汤锅(九寨沟店) · Jufuyuan Yak Meat Hot Pot (Jiuzhaigou Branch), for only 168 yuan for 2 people (about 670,000₫).
- Lunch inside the scenic area:the only place to eat is Nuorilang station, serving a set-meal buffet from 60–98 yuan (about 240,000–390,000₫) or noodles and other dishes from as low as 30 yuan (about 120,000₫). It is always overcrowded and noisy, and the food is very ordinary.
- The best approach:the evening before, stop by a convenience store and buy self-heating rice boxes (about 20–25 yuan, or about 79,000–99,000₫), sausages, pastries and mineral water to carry in your backpack. At noon, find a row of wooden tables by the stream and eat quickly and cleanly, with no waiting.

12. What to do in the evening?
The scenic area closes at 18:00, and after that everything happens around the gate: watching a Tibetan culture show, the Guozhuang bonfire dance, strolling Bianbian Street for grilled food, sitting in a butter tea shop, or simply soaking your feet after a day of walking.
The two big song-and-dance shows about Tibetan–Qiang culture areJiuzhai Songcheng RomanceandTibetan Enigma, with a comparison of ticket prices and showtimes:evening shows in Jiuzhaigou.
13. How many days to go?
Counting from Chengdu:
- 3 days 2 nights(minimum): day 1 travel there, day 2 sightseeing, day 3 return.
- 4 days 3 nights(my recommendation): add 1 spare day. If the weather is good, go into the park a second time or rest; if it is bad, use it to make up. Mountain weather changes very fast.
- If you want to add Huanglong, add about half a day to 1 day.
My actual itinerary was2 days 1 night, because I wanted to save time to explore Chengdu:
- Day 1:I went from Chongqing to Chengdu East station, then from Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai station. From the station I reached Jiuzhaigou at 16:00. In the evening I ate and shopped at a relaxed pace in the town.
- Day 2:I started sightseeing at 7:30 until 16:30, then went back to Huanglong Jiuzhai station for the 20:33 train to Chengdu. I got to Chengdu around 22:30 and rested there so I could enjoy the next morning comfortably.
14. Real cost of independent travel in Jiuzhaigou (1 person)
Actual cost table for the 2 days 1 night trip (the room is counted as a double room at 1,300,000₫/night split between 2 people):
(Not including flights, visa or eSIM. Where not to save money: a heated room and a location near the gate.)
15. Frequently asked questions
- How many days are enough for Jiuzhaigou? At least 2 days and 1 night from Chengdu. 4 days and 3 nights is the most comfortable.
- Can I go if I don't speak Chinese? Yes. I don't speak any Chinese and only used a translation app. Signs inside the park are in English too, and a photo-translate app handled almost everything else.
- Will I get altitude sickness? Not much in Jiuzhaigou (2,000–3,100 m). Huanglong and Jiuhuang Airport are where it's more likely.
- Do I need to book tickets in advance? In autumn, yes. In the low season, it's still a good idea tobook tickets aheadto be safe.
- Are there clean toilets inside? Eco toilets are placed close together at all the main bus transfer stops. They are cleaned constantly and are far cleaner than at most mountain tourist spots in China.
- Can older people and small children manage? Absolutely. Buses take you right to each main sight, and the wooden boardwalks are flat with safe railings. Older people can just stroll the flat lake sections (about 300–500 m) and then hop back on the bus, with no tiring climbs.
