Jiuzhaigou weather: which month is the most beautiful and what to wear?

ChowWritten by Chow · Updated 10/2026 · 3 min read

Before the trip I checked the forecast and saw 10°C in the daytime, thought it wouldn't be too cold, and figured 3 layers (a thermal top, a sweater and a jacket) would be enough. The morning I entered the park, I stood at the gate at 7:00 shivering, with my phone showing 3 degrees. By the time I reached Long Lake it was 0 degrees. Mountain areas have a huge day-night difference, and the forecast temperature is for the town, not for Long Lake, which is over 1,000 m higher.

This article gathers Jiuzhaigou weather by month and the clothes I brought, so you don't end up like me.

Temperatures are for the gate area (~2,000 m). Up at Long Lake or Huanglong it's about 5–8°C lower.

So which month is Jiuzhaigou the most beautiful?

  • Most beautiful:mid October – early November.
  • Quiet, cheap, with snow:December – February.
  • Lush green, mighty waterfalls:June – August (accepting the rain).
  • Avoid:October 1–7 and Chinese Lunar New Year – far too crowded.

Note:If your Jiuzhaigou trip falls in peak season, make sure to booktrain ticket, transport tickets, admission ticketsandhotelearly, about 60 days ahead, so prices aren't too high and there's still availability. Booking close to the date at this time of year often sells out, and tickets can run out within a few hours of going on sale. So if you can book ahead, book early.

What to wear in Jiuzhaigou in autumn (September–November)

The rule:several thin layers that are easy to take off and put on.Mornings are 0–5°C, and walking in the midday sun can get warm.

I wore:

  • Inner layer: thermal top
  • Middle layer: thin sweater / fleece
  • Outer layer: light down jacket (folds small into the backpack)
  • Pants: thermal long pants or trekking pants + thermal leggings underneath
  • Wool hat, scarf, thin gloves (touchscreen compatible)
  • Sneakers/trekking shoes with good grip

Winter (December–March)

Thick down jacket, 2 layers of thermal pants, waterproof shoes, heat patches. The boardwalks have ice and are very slippery.

Spring & summer (April–August)

Waterproof windbreaker, thin long-sleeve top, folding umbrella or rain jacket. Still bring 1 warm top for the morning and for going up to Long Lake.

Don't forget the small things

Besides clothes, there are a few things I felt miserable without:sunscreen + lip balm(the highland sun is harsh and the air is very dry),a power bank(batteries drain fast in the cold) anda thermos. The full checklist – documents,eSIM, apps, medicine, preventing altitude sickness – is gathered in the articlewhat to prepare for Jiuzhaigou.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jiuzhaigou cold in October?

Yes, especially in the morning. On my mid-October trip, the daytime forecast was 10°C, but at 7am at the gate my phone showed 3 degrees, and up at Long Lake it was 0 degrees. Wear 3 layers: thermal underwear, a sweater, a jacket.

Is Jiuzhaigou worth visiting in winter?

December – February is quiet, cheap and snowy, and waterfalls may freeze. Daytime is about 5°C, nights drop to -6°C, and the icy boardwalks are very slippery, so you need a thick down jacket and waterproof shoes.

Does it rain a lot in summer?

July – August is the rainy season, but in return the waterfalls are full and the trees lush green. Bring a waterproof windbreaker, a folding umbrella or a rain poncho, and still pack 1 warm layer for the morning.

How much colder is it at Long Lake than at the gate?

The temperatures in the table are for the gate area (about 2,000 m). At Long Lake or Huanglong it is about 5–8°C lower.

When should I avoid visiting Jiuzhaigou?

The week of 1–7 October (China's National Day) and Chinese New Year, because it is far too crowded.

Now that you know what to wear, move on to the harder part: booking train tickets, entry tickets and hotels – it's all in theJiuzhaigou independent travel guide 2026.
