Going from Chengdu up to Jiuzhaigou, the food changes completely. Less of the numbing Sichuan spice, and instead yak beef, highland barley (青稞) and dairy butter, the food of the Tibetan highlands: full of energy and warming. Perfect for days of walking outdoors in the cold.

If you're wondering what to eat in Jiuzhaigou, here are 7 Tibetan specialties easiest to find around the gate, ordered from easiest to eat to "unusual" for Vietnamese tastes.

Part of the Jiuzhaigou independent travel guide.

Prices in this article are reference prices from Trip.com and review posts, converted at about 3,960₫/yuan. Prices vary by restaurant and by season.

1. Yak hot pot (牦牛肉火锅)

Easy to eat ★★★★★~70–85 yuan/person

The one to try if you only get a single meal. Yak is a long-haired highland cattle, with lean, low-fat meat that is chewier and more fragrant than regular beef. The broth is usually made from simmered bones, and many places add wild mushrooms and goji berries. The broth is not spicy by default; order extra if you want heat.

Price: yak hot pot restaurants near the gate average about 70–85 yuan/person (about 280,000–340,000₫). How to order and what to watch out for when eating yak hot pot is in the post Jiuzhaigou yak hot pot. The restaurant I ate at is 聚福源 (Jufuyuan); see its location on Amap.

2. Grilled meat skewers

Easy to eat ★★★★★~10 yuan/skewer

Yak or lamb on skewers, charcoal-grilled and sprinkled with chili powder and cumin. In the evening there are many grill stalls along Bianbian Street. Price about 10 yuan/skewer (about 40,000₫). If you want to catch a show after eating, see the post evening shows in Jiuzhaigou.

3. Yak yogurt (牦牛酸奶)

Easy to eat ★★★★☆

Made from yak milk, thicker and tarter than regular yogurt, eaten with sugar or honey. It is often on the menu at Tibetan restaurants and is usually ordered as dessert after a hot pot meal.

4. Tibetan barley bread (青稞饼)

Easy to eat ★★★★☆~10 yuan each

Bread made from highland barley flour, baked or pan-fried until golden, then cut into wedges like pizza. It tastes slightly nutty, not sweet, and fills you up. It is dry and easy to carry, so it makes a handy lunch inside the park. Price about 10 yuan each (about 40,000₫).

5. Barley wine (青稞酒)

Easy to eat ★★★☆☆

Brewed from highland barley, light and slightly sweet-sour, a bit like Vietnamese sticky rice wine. Tibetans often offer guests a cup during a meal.

The scenic area sits at about 2,000–3,100 m, so don't drink much. Alcohol hits faster than at low altitude and can easily make altitude sickness worse.

6. Butter tea (酥油茶)

Easy to eat ★★★☆☆~28 yuan/pot

Strong black tea whisked with yak butter and salt. It tastes salty and rich, very different from the sweet milk tea we know. Tibetans drink it all day to stay warm. At restaurants, butter tea is usually sold by the pot, for about 28 yuan/pot (about 110,000₫), enough for many cups, so if you are in a group, one pot to share is just right.

7. Tsampa (糌粑)

Easy to eat ★★☆☆☆

The everyday staple of Tibetans: roasted highland barley flour mixed with butter tea or butter, shaped into balls by hand and eaten. It tastes nutty, a bit dry and unusual. Not everyone likes it, but it is worth trying once if you want to know what "original" Tibetan food is like. Many Tibetan restaurants sell tsampa as a set with butter tea.

Besides the 7 above: wontons and Tibetan-style mixed rice

In Jiuzhaigou, I ate wontons filled with meat and egg and Tibetan-style mixed rice with beef and bell pepper. These two taste more familiar than butter and barley, and suit lunch or a change of flavor after hot pot.

Price: wontons 12 yuan (about 48,000₫), mixed rice 28 yuan (about 110,000₫).

What to eat in Jiuzhaigou while you are inside the park?

Inside the park there are few choices. The main place to eat is the buffet restaurant at Nuorilang central station, where the three branches meet:

Price: buffet from about 60 yuan/person (about 240,000₫); some sources also list 98 and 138 yuan options.

Queue: at lunchtime in peak season you often wait 20 minutes or more. Eat early before 11:00 or after 13:00.

Kiosks: a few are scattered around selling drinks, noodles and snacks, at higher prices than outside because everything has to be carried in.

The cheapest and least time-consuming way is to bring food in from outside: barley bread, boiled eggs, chocolate, fruit, a flask of hot water. Eat lunch on a bench by the lake, then save a really good dinner for outside the gate.

Where are the Jiuzhaigou restaurants concentrated?

Bianbian Street (边边街): the main food area, about 1 km from the gate. It has hot pot places, grill stalls and Sichuan restaurants. Most open from the morning until about 22:30.

Pengfeng Village (彭丰村): along the national highway near the gate there are many yak hot pot restaurants and Tibetan-style eateries.

Right around the ticket gate: noodle shops, set meals and fast food, handy for breakfast before you enter.

Homestays: many Tibetan-run homestays will cook dinner if you tell them in advance.

If you want to go out to eat every night without calling a car, stay near Bianbian Street. How to choose where to stay is in the post where to stay in Jiuzhaigou.

Tips for ordering when you don't speak Chinese

  • Use a translation app with a camera mode to read the menu. Google Translate does not work in China without an eSIM/roaming, so download the offline Chinese pack beforehand, or use Baidu Translate.
  • Many restaurants take orders by scanning a QR code on WeChat or Alipay, and the menus have photos, so it is easy to choose.
  • A few useful words: 不辣 (bù là): not spicy · 微辣 (wēi là): mildly spicy · 牦牛肉 (máo niú ròu): yak meat.
