On an independent Jiuzhaigou trip, what decides whether your trip is relaxed or tiring is choosing a hotel right by the gate. If you're unsure where to stay in Jiuzhaigou, just look for an area within about 1.5 km or less from the gate: a relaxed 15–20 minute walk in the morning gets you there, with no worry about traffic or calling a car early.
When I first looked for a room, I made a mistake almost every first-timer makes: I opened the Trip.com app and typed just "Jiuzhaigou". That's the English name of Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟), and almost every hotel in the area has this word in its name. The Jiuzhaigou area is huge, and searching that way, the app returned a pile of gorgeous hotels at surprisingly low prices, but it turned out they were ten to dozens of kilometers from the gate, and you'd need a car to get around in the morning. And the places right by the gate jump in price in peak season.
This article helps you read the Jiuzhaigou map of the area around the gate yourself and understand each zone, so you can pick the right place for your needs.

The layout at a glance
The Jiuzhaigou gate is in the town of Zhangzha (漳扎镇, Zhangzha Town), along a main road that follows the river valley. Most hotels and restaurants stretch along both sides of this road, so "near or far" really means which part of that road you're on.
| Zone | To the gate | Price | Evenings |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · Goukou | Walkable, most convenient | Highest | Right around the hotel |
| B · Bianbian | Walkable | Reasonable | Liveliest |
| C · Far from the gate | Need a car | Good for the room size | Need to call a car |
| D · Resorts, county town | 30–60 min by car | Resorts expensive, county town cheap | Mostly stuck in the hotel |
Zone A – Goukou (沟口), right by the gate
"Goukou" means "valley mouth", the area right at the ticket gate (on the map it's Jiuzhai Valley National Park), within a 5–10 minute walk. Lots of mid-range and chain hotels.
Pros: most convenient. Leave your room at 7:00 and you can still be first in line. Close to the bus stop to the station.
Cons: highest prices, and rooms sell out early in autumn. The main road has traffic and can be noisy.
Good for: people with only 1 day of sightseeing, and families with older people.
Zone B – Pengfeng Village (彭丰村) & Bianbian Street (边边街)
About 10–20 minutes on foot. This is the zone I like most for its atmosphere: lots of Tibetan homestays, hotpot places and grill restaurants, and the street lights in the evening make for a nice stroll.
Pros: more reasonable prices than zone A, plenty of food choices, and a "local" feel.
Cons: some homestays have poor heating, so ask carefully before booking. Walking to the gate in the early morning is quite cold, so dress warm.
Good for: couples, groups of friends, and people who like to walk.
Zone C – 2–5 km from the gate
You need a 5–15 minute car ride. For the same price, hotels here are much roomier.
Pros: spacious rooms, good prices, quiet.
Cons: early mornings depend on a shuttle or taxi, and going out to eat in the evening also means calling a car.
Good for: people with a private car or driving themselves, or hotels with an early morning shuttle.
Zone D – Distant resorts and the county town
Big resorts 15–20 km or more from the gate, or the county town (Jiuzhaigou County) about 40 km away.
Pros: beautiful resorts with spas and shows. The county town is cheap.
Cons: 30–60 minutes by car every morning. For first-time independent travelers, I don't recommend staying here.
Good for: people on a relaxing getaway who aren't in a hurry to sightsee.
Left or right of the gate?
Standing at the ticket gate, with your back to the scenic area, looking out at the road, the hotels on the two sides split into two strips:
Left (toward Huanglong and the high-speed train station): the busiest, with restaurants, bubble tea shops and souvenirs packed together like a miniature town. In the morning it's only a 15–20 minute walk to the gate.
Right (toward the county town): there are shops and restaurants too but fewer, and the walk to the gate is a bit longer.
With an itinerary 2 days 1 night where you only have dinner here once, the left strip is the most convenient: bustling food and strolling in the evening, and a walk to the gate in the morning.
How to check whether a hotel is really close
Don't trust the word "Jiuzhaigou" or "near Jiuzhaigou" in a hotel's name. It takes 2 minutes to check for yourself in the Trip.com app:
- Change the search keyword. Instead of typing just "Jiuzhaigou", type exactly "Jiuzhaigou National Park". The app will list hotels around the national park and the main gate.
- When you see a hotel you like, don't book yet. Tap "View on map / View map" right below the hotel name.
- Select the point Jiuzhai Valley National Park (or the ticket gate) to see the real distance. Under 1.5 km is good to book, for example, a hotel 1.1 km from the gate, about a 17-minute walk, is ideal.
- Read the most recent reviews to see whether they mention "暖气/空调" (heating/air conditioning). Autumn nights here drop to nearly 0°C.
So where should you stay when visiting Jiuzhaigou?
First time traveling independently: zone A or zone B, no need to think too hard.
If you don't want to spend time checking each one on the map, I've already filtered 6 hotels within 1.5 km of the Jiuzhaigou gate, close by and with good facilities. Just tap in to see prices for your dates and read the real reviews to pick the best room:
- JI Hotel: a well-known hotel chain, 1.1 km from the gate. Highly recommended.
- Homeinn · neo: a well-known hotel chain, 1.1 km from the gate. Highly recommended.
- Starry Sky Hotel: the hotel I stayed at, great value, 1.1 km from the gate. Highly recommended.
- Vienna Hotel: a new chain hotel, 1.1 km from the gate. Highly recommended.
- YOUJIA · Youjia Home stay: 1.5 km from the gate.
- Private Enjoy Travel Hotel: 1.1 km from the gate.
One more reason to stay in zone A or B: the scenic area closes in the afternoon, and all the evening activities (restaurants, Bianbian Street, Tibetan shows) are concentrated around here. Stay far away and you're mostly stuck in the hotel in the evening. What shows to see here in the evening, I wrote about in evening shows in Jiuzhaigou.
Frequently asked questions
Where should you stay in Jiuzhaigou if you only have 1 day of sightseeing?
Zone A (Goukou), within a 5–10 minute walk to the ticket gate. Leaving your room at 7am is enough to be first in the queue, and in the afternoon it is also close to the bus stop out to the station.
How far from the gate is walkable?
Under 1.5 km. That distance is a 15–20 minute walk, and early in the morning you don't need to call a ride or worry about traffic jams.
Do I need to book a room early?
Yes. In peak season, wherever you stay in Jiuzhaigou you should book early, especially in zone A right by the gate, since rooms sell out very fast in autumn.
Are homestays warm enough?
Some homestays have poor heating. Before booking, read the latest reviews to see whether they mention 暖气/空调 (heating/air conditioning), because autumn nights here drop to nearly 0°C.
Is it okay to stay in the county town to save money?
It's fine if you have a private car or are going for a relaxing getaway. But the county town is about 40 km from the gate, a 30–60 minute ride every morning, so for a first independent trip I don't recommend staying there.
Once you've picked a zone, see the 6 hotels near the gate that I compared, or go back to the 2026 independent Jiuzhaigou travel guide to sort out the rest.
